Nordkapp: Lessons learnt through Louvimo

Nordkapp are a group of experienced designers, strategists and technologists who aim to "make the future happen!"

As a creative team, they are focused on improving the service interaction for their client's customers. Nordkapp work with a diverse range of customers, always with ‘design thinking' at the heart of their process, whether it be managing interactions or developing user interface platforms.

Nordkapp joined the Luovimo project with no prior experience in operating in an international environment. The original idea when joining Luovimo was to explore the possibilities of design in the automobile industry. Nordkapp had identified the huge change that was happening with smart cars, touch screens, digital dashboards and wanted to be part of that change. Finpro connected Nordkapp with a car industry expert in the US and it became apparent that the industry players were very well established and competing with the tried and tested agencies from Silicon Valley was a non-starter. This was the first lesson learnt "Don't try and do 2 new things at the same time. Select what you are good at and go international with that concept."

Switching focus was the right decision, and meant that Nordkapp could focus on one of their areas of expertise – urban screens. Still a fairly new phenomenon, the number and use of urban screens is continuing to expand. The opportunity is great and Nordkapp have genuine experience and know-how to overcome the obstacles which exist in such a dynamic field. Finpro identified companies and individuals in the German speaking markets and arranged meetings at an exhibition. This was lesson two: "a much more narrow focus makes the expansion process more stream-lined".

The final lesson for Nordkapp came about through their own International Activities, networking with other companies working with urban screens and other start ups in the US and central Europe. Progress was very challenging but managing Director, Panu Korhonenexplained that "you learn by doing, try something, fail fast and learn".

Nordkapp have dipped their toe into the international environment and with a positive feeling that they understand the high level of preparation, planning and resources that are required to go international.

Nordkapp will continue to focus on the design of smooth and elegant user interfaces which create positive user experiences. The ambition to expand into international markets remains and the lessons learnt during the Luovimo project, will mean that Nordkapp are better prepared for their next steps abroad.
